Holiday Home Resort in Kodaikanal is not just any other resort. It was earlier a British military barrack where the men in uniforms were stationed here to escape the heat of the plains. The property was then bought over from the British in 1947 and has been a resort for many decades now.
Kodaikanal is a hill town in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu. the town centers around man-made, star-shaped Kodaikanal Lake, bordered by evergreen forest, lakes, waterfalls and grassy hills.
Modern Kodaikanal was established by American Christian missionaries and British bureaucrats in 1845, as a refuge from the high temperatures. In the 20th century a few elite Indians came to realise the value of this enchanting hill station and started relocating here.
HOLIDAY HOME RESORT
Nestled amidst beautiful landscape this property is just 4 kms away from the city centre. You can take a taxi from the bus stop in case you haven’t driven down in a car. Manager Deena had arranged a taxi for my pick up. It took around 10 hours to reach Kodaikanal from Bangalore.
Once a barrack, Now a Resort
Once you reach the resort, you will be welcomed by the ever-friendly and courteous staff. The marvelous spread of well-maintained gardens throughout the landscape is a sight worth it. You will probably run out of counting the number of varieties of flowers in their gardens.
Divin and I stayed in one of the cottages facing a stream and a view of the jungle above. The cottages were spacious and warm. This setting is just perfect to enjoy a cup of hot coffee or read a book while the mist settles on the window panes. The space is truly dreamy. If you are lucky you might spot a bison.
The resort is a perfect escape from the demanding city life. Whether you’re looking for a romantic getaway, a honeymoon destination or perhaps just some time away from your daily routine.
One of the most interesting aspects about the resort is their zero-waste kitchen. There is absolutely no garbage that the kitchen produces. The waste from the kitchen is segregated and recycled completely. We were impressed with the way it functions and were inspired to follow a zero-waste kitchen at our home. Ask the staff and they will be pleased to take you around to show this. They also grow some of the vegetables and herbs used in the kitchen.
Buffet Breakfast & Dinner had modest spread. I wouldn’t rate it too high but the spread was decent. For Lunch we went for al carte. One of the mornings they served us breakfast in the garden front of our cottage.
IN & AROUND
There are many tourist hotspots & hidden gems in and around Kodaikanal. However, be aware that there are no auto rickshaws. You either have to hire a car or drive in your own. You could ask the resort staff and they will arrange for a sightseeing tour.
For a pleasant stay that’s not too heavy on your pocket and best value for money I would definitely recommend Holiday Home Resort.
